Fly reels
There is not much on fly reels as compared to the modern spinning or casting reels. In general the reels are used for storing lines only. Therefore the reels design is very basic and simple except for few specialized modern reels targeting the elusive big games. For the saltwater purposes, the reels are made to be corrosive resistance and equipped with a more advance drag system.
Most freshwater reels dont really have a high-tech drag system, just a simple clicker. If you need to stop a big fish you need to do the “palming”. Just use your own palm to the reel spool. This provide extra resistance to the fish. This is where the experience come in handy. Only experience will tell you how much pressure to use. Too little pressure, then the fish will strip out all you line. On the other hand too little pressure might caused your line to break.
In contrary, saltwater reels tend to be equipped with a more advance drag system. The drag system provide us with extra advantage when fighting the big one. If you are targeting for the salfwater species, look for reel which equipped with a good drag system. You never know what fish will take your fly.
